Investing in Afterschool Funding Matters to Me

My name is [Your Name], and I’m a [parent/community member/supporter] from [Your City], Utah. I’m writing today to urge you to support full federal funding for afterschool and summer learning programs—especially those like Boys & Girls Clubs that serve thousands of youth in our state.

 

Afterschool programs change lives—for kids, families, and communities. In Utah, these programs help children succeed in school, stay safe, and prepare for future careers. They also allow people like me to work, knowing our children are in trusted, enriching environments.

 

But the need far outweighs the support:

  • Over 35,000 kids in Salt Lake County alone need access to licensed care, and only 28% of programs statewide offer teen services.
  • Clubs and other afterschool providers are struggling with rising costs, staffing shortages, and lack of mental health resources.
  • Without sustained federal support, these programs cannot meet the growing demand in our communities.

 

I respectfully ask you to:

  1. Support the Youth Workforce Readiness Act (H.R. 2910) to help teens gain the skills and confidence they need for the future.
  2. Include $130 million for the Youth Mentoring Initiative, which supports vulnerable youth including Native youth, military-connected kids, and those affected by poverty and trauma.

 

Every $1 invested in afterschool returns more than $10 in economic benefits—by preventing crime, improving school outcomes, supporting parents, and helping youth grow into responsible adults.

 

I hope you’ll stand with Utah families by protecting and expanding afterschool funding.
